Wywiad z 94 z Timo Tolkkim

Stratovarius deserves better than the current apparent unawareness. Their technical hard rock is powerful and elaborate, in the style of Queensrÿche, Helloween, and also Dream Theater. The only disadvantage is that Stratovarius is Finnish. Timo [Tolkki], the guitarist/vocalist, introduces his group, and his reasonable hopes. To discover and to love stubbornly.

Dreamspace is not the first try for you. It is your third album, and so far the most successful one. How did you achieve such excellence?

It's true that Dreamspace is our best album, which is also very logical. We have spent on it all our energy, our concentration, and also our ideas. For our first and second albums we still hadn't evolved this much. The first album, Fright Night, was recorded in only one week, the second, Twilight Time, dates from already two years back, and naturally we've made progress since then.

Stratovarius doesn't have to blush in front of bands like Queensrÿche or Dream Theater. Do you feel musically related to them?

They are bands I definitely love! I confess that my influences are older, and go way back to Rainbow and Deep Purple, for example. But since I am also a producer, I like to hear some well produced things, because I love the work made for the sound; and in these cases I can consider Queensrÿche an example.

How would you define the music of Stratovarius?

I would tell it's at the same time both very melodic and very technical. For me it represents a little the metal of the 90's. But it's really difficult to define your own music, because in the beginning I put a lot into the composition, then produce, and finally I play the pieces in shows. That's why it's really difficult to pull back...

And about the lyrics, what are you concerned with?

Things have changed a little. In the past we used to write a lot of fiction, but on Dreamspace there are more concrete lyrics, like 4th Reich that deals with nazism, We Are The Future that recalls questions about environment. From now on we are more concerned with social problems. It's really frightening to see what's happening to this planet. It is not a direct message, but an invitation to the thought.

If Stratovarius was American instead of Finnish, and had the advantage of being supported open-handedly, would it be bigger name?

It's really difficult to answer this question... To succeed nowadays you need support from your record company as well as extensive budgets. Especially we have to be heard for potential fans to become real fans. We've never had the opportunity of making European tour before, but now there's a chance.

Do you think there is the place in the scene for an intelligent metal band?

I'm absolutely sure of it. I also think that we belong to the bands that make mature metal. Personally I hate the current trend, "grunge". All these bands sound the same. I can't bear punk rock either, and I think that in a way grunge is the punk rock of the 90's. I just can't get anything out of it!

These bands express their hatred and their rebellion through their music. It is not the same for Stratovarius?

Yes, but that comes through in a totally different way. We like playing and we're, above all, musicians. That's why our compositions have been worked on, and our rage is expressed in a way much more "musical" and orderly. Our pieces are not easy to play. For me it's even very difficult, because I have to sing and play guitar at the same time.

You also compose very much. Are you to be considered like the head of the band?

In a way. I think I really know what the band should sound like. It would be difficult for me to have another producer, because it could cause clashes. I'm a very demanding person, but not a dictator. We are a very democratic band, but on the other hand, I am perfectionist ... perhaps even too much! I can't tell if it's good or bad, but it's like that.

*How do you feel about living in Finland?

Timo:

I like to live in Finland, actually I'm living on the countryside 25 km from the city of Helsinki. I like the peacefulness and the absense of nature and fresh air. I also like modern cities like NYC, Berlin and Tokyo, but I could never live there.

*What are you doing besides playing music?

Timo:

Besides playing music I play music. But seriously, the band is taking all my time because I also handle the managers job in this band. But here is a time schedule for my year: 4 months in the studio, 1 month on a promotion tour, 1,5 months on tour, 2 months writing new songs and demoing them, 1 month rehearsing and arranging new songs with the band. The rest is for organizing and of course time for myself and the people close to me. Music is my whole life. It is my tool in expressing myself.

*Why is "time" the theme of your album?

Timo:

Time is everlasting. It goes on and on. People were born, people die, but time just moves on and never look back.

*Why did you choose to play music?

Timo:

I really don't know. My father and mother are both so unmusical than a human being could ever be. I started playing classical guitar when I was 7.

*What is the most important thing in you life besides music?

Timo:

My Family.

*Which virtue do you appreciate most on a woman?

Timo:

Intelligence, definetely.

*Which virtue do you appreciate most on a man?

Timo:

Honesty.

*Which goal did you set yourself for life?

Timo:

I set myself the goal to be happy and do things that make me and the people around me happy.

*If you could be an animal, which animal would you like to be?

Timo:

A mouse.

*Would you say that the relationship between you and your guitar is kind of erotic?

Timo:

I don't know, it depends on how it's being looked and who is looking. More than being erotic I'd say my guitar playing can be described as emotional. Sometimes it is very aggressive but sometimes very very sad and beautiful. When I was developing my technique when I was from 12 to 18 years old I played 6-10 hours per day, I even slept with my guitar at that time!!!

*How do you see the situation about the opportunities of new technologies and the actual radical change through "internet"? Do you feel it as a threat or as a considerable step forward?

Timo:

I am very much a fan of all new technologies, but there has to be a limit to that otherwise the human race will be destroyed. I feel that internet has only scratched the surface of what it can really achieve.

*Who was your idol?

Timo:

Musically Ritchie Blackmore.

*What do you think have humans still to learn?

Timo:

Humans have learned nothing yet. We have destroyed more in 100 years than in the whole history of mankind!!! We need to learn to love and live in peace and respect the nature and listen to that small inner voice which tells us if we are wrong or right.

*What do you think humans should have refrain from inventing?

Timo:

Instead of inventing "cool" weapons such as neutron bomb which kills the people but saves the buildings we should concentrate to solve the real problems of the world such as pollution, greed and the growth of the military industry.

*Do you like animals?

Timo:

I love animals. They genuinely show their deepest emotions and feelings and do not know how to lie and be mean intentionally. We have two dogs, two parrots, some mice and a horse.

*Which film do you like most?

Timo:

1.YOU HAVE A NEW ALBUM CALLED "VISIONS" OUT, TELL SOMETHING ABOUT IT

It is our sixth album and there are some interesting themes on it.
Musically it is guaranteed Stratovarius style and the next "step" for us after the "EPISODE" album.
Lyrically there are something different we«ve done before.
I think we are living very serious times at the moment.
There is so much hatred in the world, so much greediness, starvation and pollution.
We are just consuming more and more and the planet can«t take it anymore.
So the nature will answer to all this in its own way.
We are getting more diseases and the bacterias get stronger and this is caused by the overpopulation of the world.

Titletrack "VISIONS" is about different prophecies from Nostradamus and the Bible, namely the Book Of Revelation.
Nostradamus said that there will be tremendous changes in the world when we are approaching the year 2000.
He even gave a specific month, July 1999, and warned that the big change will happen then.
He said it will come from EAST, so it can be many things; nuclear attack of China or Russia.
All of us have seen the comet known as Hale-Bopp.
In the bible it is said, that when the comet is ripping on the sky and the Holy Roman
Empire rises, then you and I must die. (Roman Empire here can mean any country really)

ARE YOU A RELIGIOUS PERSON AND WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT RELIGION?

I am finding myself more as a fatalist nowadays.
I find it really hard to believe in God as we know it.
I can`t understand why God would allow 2 year old child to die to AIDS or 7 year old kid to die to cancer.
I believe that religion is more like an escape to human being, something that gives hope that there is something after the death.

I find myself not believing in any of this nowadays.
It might just be that we are here just by coincidence and everything what will happen, will happen.
If you are destined to die in a car accident, you will die in a car accident.
There is nothing you can do about it.
However you can affect to your own life a lot, you are the one who holds the key to the mystery of life itself.

If you look all the knowledge, Christianity is based on the fact that Mankind is 6000 years old.
So 6000 years ago God created Man.
We have enough evidence that we can say that Human beings are here as a part of evolutionary process which has been going on Millions of years.
And when you realize all this, the whole foundation of Christianity collapses like a house of cards.

WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT TOURING PLANS?

There«s gonna be a lot of touring for "VISIONS" album.
We start playing in Finland a tour of 2 weeks in the middle of May.
After that we go to Spain for a festival in Granada, I believe with Rainbow and bunch of others.
In June we play some festivals in Finland and in July we go to South America with Gamma Ray.
We start our headlining tour in Europe on 28.8 from Hamburg Germany.
This tour will last about 6 weeks and will go through entire Europe.
I think it«s gonna be a good tour for us.

WHERE DO YOU THINK STRATOVARIUS IS GOING FOR MUSICALLY?

I see it going even deeper to the bands style.
I think we will do a real concept album next and this will be a really big sounding with orchestral elements and the choir.
All we need to do is to find a good theme for it.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC NOWADAYS?

Bach, Vivaldi, baroque music in generally and all the bands I grew up listening to:
Rainbow, Dio, (old) Iron Maiden etc..

YOU HAVE DONE SIX STUDIOALBUMS, HOW ABOUT A LIVE ALBUM?

Yes, we are going to record some shows on an upcoming tour and let«s see how it turns out to be.
I think if we do it, it will be released early 98.

Patricia: Bonjour, comment vas-tu?
Timo: Bonjour, je me sens mieux.

Patricia: Quels sont les thèmes de ton 3ème album solo?
Timo: J’ai composé quelques nouvelles chansons pendant cette tournée. Quand je retournerai en Finlande, peut-être que Lauri et Tuomas viendront chez moi, afin que nous puissions continuer à travailler ensemble.
Les projets sont de commencer à enregistrer au printemps, si tout va bien. Cela dépendra de Stratovarius. Si nous avons terminé les chansons, l’album sortira l’an prochain. Mais attendons de voir comment cela va se passer…

Patricia: Quels sont les musiciens qui vont accompagner Lauri et Tuomas pour le prochain album solo?
Timo: Mirka (Rantanen), Janne (Warmen), et peut-être Michäel Romeo de Symphony X. Je ne sais pas… Il joue presque toutes les parties guitares sur mes deux précédents albums. Il fera peut-être quelques solos sur celui-là aussi.

Patricia: Comment crées-tu tes lignes de chant?
Timo: Je n’ai jamais rien en ordre dans ma tête. Quand je compose, j’utilise mon téléphone portable Nokia, et j’écoute ce que j’ai fais. Hier par exemple, j’ai réécouté ce que j’ai chanté, et j’ai essayé de reproduire le tout sur les claviers.

Patricia: Tu écris les paroles de tes chansons avant ou après avoir composé la musique?
Timo: Après, toujours.

Patricia: Comment cela se passe t-il maintenant avec ton propre label? Je veux dire, comment travailles-tu avec les groupes, Wingdom par exemple?
Timo: Mikko (Harkin) est venu me voir et m’a dit qu’ils avaient fais un album, et que si je voulais l’écouter… Alors, je leur ai dis: "Si je peux vous aider, j’essaierai de faire quelque chose pour vous." J’ai alors fais une affaire pour eux avec le Japon. J’ai donc réalisé l’album sur mon propre label, et conclu de nouveaux marchés avec d’autres pays également. Récemment, j’ai proposé aux gars de jouer en 1ère partie de Stratovarius et d’Hammerfall en Finlande. C’est un jeune groupe, mais ce sont de très bons et talentueux musiciens, et je pense que l’album est très bon également. J’espère que beaucoup de monde l’écoutera. Il est toutefois très difficile de percer dans ce milieu, car il y a tant de groupes qui se forment maintenant. Wingdom, ils ont un nouveau bassiste, un finlandais, qui participait à ce concert. Il restera sans doute définitivement avec le groupe, parce que c’était trop compliqué de travailler avec Alessandro (Lotta) qui lui vit en Italie.
Ce nouveau bassiste, je ne me souviens pas de son nom, car c’était la 1ère fois que je le voyais. Smile

Parfois, je reçois des démos d’autres groupes, mais je n’ai pas encore vraiment entendu quelque chose d’aussi bon que ce qu’a fait Wingdom. Si toutefois il y avait du nouveau, alors je pourrais être intéressé.

Patricia: Comment se passent les voyages en tour bus?
Timo: C’est ennuyeux; biensûr, c’est sympa si tu peux visiter certains endroits comme hier par exemple, j’étais au centre de cette ville (Lille), je me promenais et c’était plutôt agréable.
En général, les voyages se passent au moment où tu dors. Quand j’étais plus jeune, il y a environ 10 ans, je n’avais aucuns problèmes pour dormir dans le bus, mais maintenant j’en ai. Je ne peux plus du tout dormir quand ça bouge sur la route, je déteste ça.
En ce qui concerne le bruit, ce n’est pas compliqué pour moi car j’ai des boules quiès. Mais cela n’est pas très agréable d’avoir à les porter pendant le sommeil. Il y a aussi trop de monde dans le bus, et nous n’avons pas assez d’espace.

Patricia: Comment fais-tu pour rester en forme durant une aussi longue tournée ?
Timo: Eh bien, disons que je ne fais plus rien, c’est ça l’ennui. A part un peu de marche à pieds. Cependant, comme mon dos se porte mieux, je devrais essayer de marcher davantage. Par le passé, je courais et faisais de la gym, du fitness. Mais je n’ai plus trop les possibilités de continuer maintenant. Je n’ai pas fais beaucoup de sport cette année. Je sais que désormais, je dois prendre soin de mon dos, je vieillis. Il faut que je m’occupe un peu plus de moi.

Patricia: De quel œil vois-tu le fait que l’on fasse avec notre site français, de la promotion pour ta musique?
Timo: C’est excellent que je possède ce site en France, parce que je ne peux pas vraiment parler votre langue, cela m’est assez difficile. Si l’on parle de promotion, si quelqu’un, un fan ou un ami hisse le site au plus haut point, c’est encore mieux d’après moi, car le label d’enregistrement peut alors proposer quelque chose. Je veux dire par là que, si tu as un bon site où les fans peuvent s’inscrire et parler du groupe, tout comme nous le faisons pour cette interview, alors j’obtiens un nouveau départ, des comptes-rendus de concerts… Smile

C’est vraiment super!

Patricia: Comment se sont passées tes tournées canadiennes et nord américaines avec Stratovarius?
Timo: C’était vraiment bien. Certains concerts s’avérèrent très bons, d’autres un peu moins…Au Canada (côté français) c’était super, on a eu beaucoup de monde à Montréal et à Québec. Le public y était excellent!
Toutes les personnes que nous y avons rencontrées étaient très sympas.
Je n’ai jamais visité le Canada auparavant, ce fut donc bien agréable aussi de découvrir de nouvelles villes.

Patricia: Et ta tournée Sud Américaine?
Timo: Très bien. Nous avons reçu un très bon accueil de la part du public. Nous avons filmé un DVD live à São Paulo. Cependant, je ne sais pas encore quand il sortira. Jens doit y travailler dessus, notamment sur les prises de vues…Timo (Tolkki) devrait ensuite mixer le son. Mais pour l’instant, nous n’avons pas le temps de nous en occuper, car nous sommes encore en tournée.

Patricia: Pourquoi avez-vous choisi d’enregistrer ce DVD au Brésil?
Timo: Nous avions environ 6000 personnes présentes ici. Nous connaissions également une équipe qui avait déjà filmé d’autres concerts de par le passé, et nous savions qu’ils étaient cool. Ils pouvaient réaliser ce DVD pour nous, c’est pourquoi nous avons choisi le Brésil.

Patricia: Comment vois-tu le futur avec Stratovarius maintenant?
Timo: Après cette tournée, nous devons partir au Japon, en Grèce. Egalement à Taïwan et Hong Kong en Chine. Je n’y suis jamais allé précédemment, alors c’est bien. Peut-être que nous ferons aussi quelques festivals d’été, mais je ne sais pas encore lesquels.

Patricia: Le Wacken peut-être?
Timo: Probablement pas. Nous y avons déjà participé cet été, et nous n’avons pu jouer que 3 chansons, c’était très étrange…
Je ne sais pas quand le nouvel album sortira. Nous voulions commencer à enregistrer, mais cela ne sera pas terminé l’an prochain. S’il devait sortir, ce que j’ignore totalement, je ne pourrai pas pour autant vous promettre suite à cela, de nouvelles tournées.

Patricia: Concernant ton site officiel, est-ce toi qui a fait le désign?
Timo: Pas en totalité. J’ai demandé à quelqu’un d’autre de m’aider.

Autres questions:

Patricia: Joues-tu encore de la batterie?
Timo: Non, je n’en ai pas fais depuis 20 ans.

Patricia: Tu as arrêté complètement?
Timo: Je n’ai pas de batterie chez moi car je manque de place. Cela serait bien d’en avoir une, bien entendu… Je joue de la batterie de table (il frappe sur la table avec ses mains) (rires tous les deux).

Patricia: Pourquoi y a-t-il autant de saunas en Finlande, et aussi peu en France?
Timo: C’est simplement parce que nous vivons dans un pays plus froid. Je crois que nous avons inventé ce genre de sauna, car les indiens eux, en ont de divers types.
Ici, nous avons des saunas finlandais, qui sont malgré tout proches des originaux. Je possède un sauna chez moi.

Patricia: C’est assez traditionnel n’est-ce pas?
Timo: Oui, j’adore ça. Tu jettes de l’eau sur les pierres, et cela devient plus chaud. Ce n’est pas très humide.

Patricia: Cela n’est pas trop difficile quand tu fais un sauna pour la 1ère fois?
Timo: Cela dépend de la chaleur qu’il se dégage à l’intérieur. Si ce n’est pas trop chaud, alors ça va tout seul.

Patricia: Cela ressemble à une sorte de relaxation…
Timo: Oui beaucoup. Je peux y écouter de la musique.
Biensûr, la plupart des finlandais boivent dans le sauna. De la bière, souvent. C’est agréable et relaxant. (rires)

Patricia: Comment était ton enfance?
Timo: Assez bien. J’ai encore mes parents et mes deux frères. Je dirais que c’était une vie simple, à la campagne, en Finlande. Nous n’étions pas riches mais, c’était plutôt cool. Mon père et ma mère ont travaillé dur, surtout mon père.

Patricia: Aimes-tu le cinéma, et quel genres de films apprécies-tu?
Timo: En ce moment, je regarde deux séries américaines. L’une d’entre elles est similaire à Twin Peaks.
J’aime la science-fiction, je suis un grand fan de la Guerre des Etoiles. Je ne regarde pas beaucoup la télévision en fait. Je ne passe pas vraiment mon temps devant cette dernière mais, j’aime bien regarder des films quand je suis en tournée. Il n’y a rien d’autre à faire de toutes façons.

Patricia: Comment se passe une journée ordinaire en Finlande ?
Timo: Je ne sais pas ce que c’est qu’une journée ordinaire, car je n’exerce pas un métier ordinaire. Smile

Si tu parles de ma journée, en fait, je me réveille aux alentours de 9h – 9h30, et tout dépend alors de l’état de mon dos…si ça va, je sors faire un jogging matinal avant de manger. Ensuite, je déjeune, j’appelle la gym, je lis mes emails etc… J’ai déjà été éloigné de mon pays durant 5 mois et demi cette année, et j’ai seulement eu une semaine de répit à la maison, entre les tournées. En général, j’essaie de préparer les chansons pour la tournée suivante, et je tente de retrouver mes amis et ma famille.
Après cette tournée, je vais continuer à composer, et ensuite nous devrions répéter avec mon groupe, et commencer à enregistrer. J’essaierai également d’aider Wingdom sur certains points.

Patricia: Quels sont les pays que tu as le plus aimé visiter?
Timo: Je pense qu’il y en a beaucoup. La plupart d’entre eux possèdent de superbes endroits à visiter. Mais le meilleur pour moi, quand je rentre à la maison, c’est de découvrir à quel point j’adore vivre en Finlande, car tu apprécies davantage ton pays quand tu voyages beaucoup. Je pourrais sans doute vivre ailleurs, mais je devrai apprendre la langue de ce fait. C’est bien de visiter l’Amérique du sud, le Japon et certains pays d’Europe, quand tu as le temps. J’aime aussi certaines villes, mais pas les plus grandes, pas toutes.

Patricia: Peut-être des villes plus empreintes de culture alors?
Timo: Oui, certaines villes sont plus intéressantes à visiter que d’autres. J’aime en partie l’art, l’architecture, l’histoire.

Patricia: Tu n’as jamais visité la France?
Timo: J’ai visité le Louvre, la Tour Eiffel… Mais je n’y pas vraiment passé de vacances.

Patricia: Quels sont les groupes que tu écoutes en ce moment?
Timo: Avant le concert, j’écoute Shakra et Hammerfall, parce qu’ils sont tout prêts. (rires tous les deux) Mais c’est tout. Smile

J’ai sur mon ordinateur portable, certaines musiques qui sont un peu différentes des autres, comme les Beatles, Queen, Rainbow, Sarah Brightman et beaucoup d’autres… Du vieil Anthrax, Robert Plant qui est en fait très bon. Mais en tournée, je n’écoute pas autant de musique que cela. Je ne comprends absolument pas les gens qui, quand ils reviennent de la scène, veulent encore écouter de la musique. Cela n’a aucun sens pour moi.

Patricia: Peux-tu nous faire passer un petit message pour les fans français?
Timo: C’est génial d’être de retour en France. Je n’ai pas encore bu de vin rouge, mais peut-être plus tard.
Pour moi, c’est cool que nous ayons ce site web français. Prochainement, je vais sans doute avoir un site japonais. Nous verrons. Un fan souhaite le mettre en place.
J’aimerais davantage parler votre langue, mais c’est très difficile pour un finlandais d’apprendre le français. Ceci dit, c’est toujours un plaisir de revenir ici, et j’y ai aussi de bons amis. Smile

I najciekwasze pytanko było, dlaczego nowe DVD będzie zapisem koncertu z Brazylii. Tolkki powiedział, że to z tego powodu, że znali brazylijską ekipę, która zajmuję się filmowaniem i poza tym na koncercie było 6000 ludzi, co dla Tolkkiego jest "cool" Very Happy

Stratovarius: Symphonies In The Snow

(Interview from Metal Hammer No.12 Vol.4 June 26th 1989)

Finland is more likely to conjure up visual images of hot 'n' sweaty saunas than hot 'n' heavy metal bands. There are exceptions, like the infamous sleaze bags Hanoi Rocks, but even these Nordic glamsters moved South as soon as they could blag the air fare. A further exception, and looking set to change the face of Finnish rock music, is the arrival of three young and talented musicians: Timo Tolkki(guitar and vocals), Tuomo Lassila (drums and backing vocals) and Jyrki Lentonen (bass) call themselves Stratovarius and have just released their debut album "Fright Night" on CBS.

The name Stratovarius is a combination of the words Stratocaster and Stradivarius: as classical music buffs amongst you might know, a Stradivarius is an extremely famous, expensive and beautiful sounding violin, named after it's Italian builder Signore Stradivari. These young Finns are into an earload of the old classical muzak themselves. Drummer Tuomo is a student at the Helsinki Conservatory Of Music and in his "spare" time he plays for the conservatories very own symphony orchestra! He told us recently: "I'm really into combining classical influences with rock music. We're not exactly a headbanging band - I listen to a lot of heavy, progressive rock music. Believe it or not, our songs are getting longer and more and more classically influenced from day to day... I'm also a big Ozzy fan and I listen to a lot of Rush and progressive rock bands like Yes and Pink Floyd as well." This blend of classical influences and prog-rock are mixed with a mega dosage of raw power and rounded off with powerful lyrics. Timo wrote the music on "Fright Night", and Tuomo and Timo conjured up the gloomy lyrics, embracing subjects like darkness and fear. "We write about ourselves and our lives." Tuomo added. "So our lyrics contain references to changing the world and the future." The three guys arranged and produced the album on their own, helped only by engineer Make Torronen. But even before recording the album, Stratovarius had frequently played to live audiences in their native Finland. Despite still in their early twenties themselves, Tuomo told us: "Our audiences at home are 'oldish' HM audiences, they're nearly always over eighteen. A lot of the younger Finnish kids are into manic thrash - it's the older crowd who like our brand of progressive rock." You have to ask yourself whether the spoilt and overfed rock audiences in the rest of the world will pay a Finnish pomp-rock band much notice, but Tuomo knows the score: "We're really aware that it's going to be difficult for us to make the break in the rest of Europe. I've never actually been to England yet, but we're not desperate to move away from Finland anyway, we really like living here." And he added: "The Finnish rock scene was quiet for the last three years, but there's loads happening at the moment. There are some really great bands and they're just going to burst on the scene soon! It's really exciting.
